For each shell element, stresses are first calculated at integration points and then extrapolated to the joints of the shell element. When multiple shell elements share a common joint, the stresses calculated from each joined shell elements may be different. When stresses averaging is turned on, the stress at the each joint is averaged by adding up the stresses from all connected shell elements and by dividing the sum by the total number of connected shell elements.
