Beginning with ETABS 2015 v15.1.0, the file ETABSTran2013.exe is no longer included in the installation due to requirements set out by Microsoft for their Windows 8.1 Desktop App Certification Program. ETABS 2013 and ETABS 2015 v15.0.0 are not affected by this.

If you have an older ETABS v7, v8, or v9 model file (*.edb) that you would like to open in ETABS 2015 v15.1.0 or later, please use one of the following methods to open the file.

Method 1

This method uses a command line to run a translator that will open the old model file and save it in a new format that is compatible with ETABS 2015 v15.1.0 or later. This method is useful if you only need to open a few old model files or if you do not have permissions on your PC to access the ETABS installation directory. Please follow these steps to use this method.

  1. Download the ETABSTran2013.zip file.
  2. Unzip this file to a location that you have permissions to access (i.e. C:\Temp).
  3. Open a command prompt and change the directory to the location where you unzipped the ETABSTran2013.exe file (i.e. cd c:\Temp)
  4. Execute the following line at the command prompt:

          ETABSTran2013.exe "ETABS|3|{old model path}|{new model path}"

where {old model path} is the full path to the old model file (i.e. C:\Temp\OldModel.edb) and {new model path} is the full path for the new file that the translator will generate (i.e. C:\Temp\NewModel.edb).

  5. Run ETABS and open the newly generated file (i.e. C:\Temp\NewModel.edb).

Method 2

This method places the translator into the installation directory such that old models can be open directly from within ETABS 2015 v15.1.0 or later. This method is useful if you need to open a large number of old model files and you have permissions on your PC to access the ETABS installation directory. Please follow these steps to use this method.

  1. Download the ETABSTran2013.zip file.
  2. Unzip this file to the ETABS installation directory (i.e. C:\Program Files\Computers and Structures\ETABS 2015). If you are unable to paste the ETABSTran2013.exe file into the installation directory then you likely do not have sufficient permissions. You can either contact your IT department to assist with copying the file, or use Method 1 above to translate the old model file.
  3. Run ETABS and open the old model file.
