There are various input and output files used by the programs. Here is a list of the files and brief explanation of the format.

Model Directory
- SDB - SAP2000 input file in binary format
- s2k - SAP2000 input file in text format
- sbk - SAP2000 backup file in binary format
- s$k - SAP2000 backup file in text format
- out - SAP2000 output file in text format
Application Data Directory
The application data directory is stored in the following locations for different versions of the program:
- V11: level and modules can be set by using c:\windows\SAP2000v11.ini file
- V12, V14: located in the following locations based on the operating system:
- Windows XP: c:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Application Data\Computers and Structures\SAP2000v12.ini (the Local Settings and Application Data directories may be hidden)
- Windows Vista, Windows 7: c:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Computers and Structures\SAP2000v12.ini
The application directory contains the following files:
- .ini file - store some global program variables, such as license level, module licenses, etc.
- .tb3 file - stores changes of the program settings, such as customizations made to the toolbar
