Below is an outline of the procedure you can use to perform the steel design check for your structure:
- Define design load combinations via "Define > Load Combinations" menu command. These design combinations can be defined either manually or using the "Add Default Design Combos" button:
- Specify design code to be used (via "Design > Steel Frame Design > View/Revise Preferences").
- Review the load combinations that will be used for the design and make changes if necessary (via "Design > Steel Frame Design > Select Design Combos").
- Run the design (via "Design > Steel Frame Design > Start Design/Check of Structure"). Please note that you must run the analysis prior to running the design.
- Review the design results either graphically (right click on a member to obtain more detailed information) or in a tabular format (via "Display > Show Tables > DESIGN DATA").
- Use various commands on the "Steel > Steel Frame Design" menu to check the design, determine how many members passed, how many members failed, etc.
I would also recommend you to watch "Introductory Tutorial" watch and learn video that can be downloaded from http://www.csiberkeley.com/Support_WL_SAP.html The last part of the video has overview of the design procedure in SAP2000. You can also review Steel Design Manual for various design codes - it is available from "Help > Documentation > Design > Steel Frame Design" menu.
Please note that there is a much more to the design in SAP2000 and that the above provides only a brief overview.
